It's 1846, London, in the middle of a deep, cold winter, and Oliver Twist (yes, that Oliver Twist) wants to own a bookshop. His heart's desire is simple. He wants to buy books and sell them, wants to wear a white apron, sweep his front steps, and sometimes, he wants to sneak away to the back room to read. Basically, he wants a middle class life that is as far as it can possibly be from his workhouse-shadowed past. When Oliver's Uncle Brownlow passes away unexpectedly, Oliver gets his chance. But Oliver is lonely working as an apprentice at a haberdashery, and, as well, his flash paper temper and taste for the gin gets him into trouble. Jack Dawkins (aka The Artful Dodger) is in London, back from being deported to Australia. He's hunting for Fagin and the gang, but since Fagin is dead and the gang is scattered to the wind, the only person from the old days that Jack can find is Oliver. Jack finds out the truth about Fagin, but instead of leaving Oliver alone, Jack stalks Oliver and brings the flavor of the gutter and the slums of Saffron Hill with him each time.  After Jack's visits get Oliver into trouble, Jack (showing his soft heart) relents and tells Oliver that Jack will leave him be if Oliver visits him, just once, at the Three Cripples. Knowing full well that Jack is a liar as well as a thief, Oliver vows to pay only one call, but instead is drawn back to Jack time and again, to their shared history, to Jack's unguarded honesty, and especially to Jack's bright green eyes, and the visits happen more than once. Oliver's desire for respectability, as well as the ridged strata of Victorian society, clashes with his growing and forbidden feelings for the compelling and charming Jack. Jack, for his part, refuses to be held back from what he wants, and flirts his way into Oliver's heart.~*~*~*~*~*~*~The Oliver Jack series tells the tale of two young men from different worlds, who meet by chance one day on the High Street in Barnet. The story of their relationship spans the whole of England, from the middle class shops of Soho to the slums and gin-palaces of Saffron Hill in London, and from there to Lyme Regis, and Hale, and Axminster, and Chertsey, and back to London again. It is an enticing, lush tale of repressed intimacy and a mutual but dangerous attraction that, should it be discovered, would result in hanging, castration, or deportation.
